OXFORD — The New Hope High School girls track and field team placed second Saturday at the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A, Region 1 meet at Oxford High School.
Oxford High won the girls meet with 209 points, followed by New Hope (93 points). West Point’s girls took eighth (19).
Mercedes Mattix paced New Hope with a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash (12.63 seconds). Teammate Chelsea Pslams took fifth in the event (13.3). Mattix also teamed with Lashya Davis, Shanice Nottage, and Chelsea Psalms to win the 4×100 relay (51.50). She also finished third in the 200 (25.87). Pslams took eighth in the 100 (30.75).

Senior Justin Cox won the triple jump (45-3). He was second in the 200 (22.27) and third in the 100 (10.92).

n Columbus girls, Starkville boys take third: At Tupelo, the Columbus High School girls scored 96 points and the Starkville High boys scored 112 points Saturday at the Class 6A, Region 1 meet at Tupelo High.
The Tupelo girls won the meet with 156 points, followed by Southaven (108). The Starkville High girls took fifth (49).
Southaven won the boys meet with 126 points, edging Tupelo (122). Columbus High’s boys took sixth (36).
Walker Mattox led the Starkville High girls by winning the 3,200 (11:57.95) and the 1,600 (5:29.46). She also was third in the 800 (2:32.89).
The Columbus High girls 4×200 relay team of Quaniesha Aaron, Kameron Corrothers, Brianna Edinburgh, Cacovia Millsap, Kiandria Patterson, and Sky Samuals won the event with a time of 1:45.56. The 4×400 relay team of Aaron, Kashaeyla Brooks, Corrothers, Patterson, and Sharissa Spencer won the event with a time of 4:11.64.
Aaron also won the 400 (1:04.09), and Kashaeyla Books won the 300 hurdles (47.87). Samuals, a seventh-grader, won the 200 (25.99).

Kamau Bostic won the 1,600 for the Starkville boys with a time of 4:39.82. He also won the 800 (2:01.16).
Martavious Foster also won the discus (152-8), and Jalan Catledge won the triple jump (41-7 1/2).

The Columbus High 4×100 relay team of Byerson Cockrell, Cedrick Jackson, Daquan Latham, George Lowery, Roshad Meeks, and Demarcus Vance won the event with a time of 43.13. It edged South haven (43.16) for the title.
Sammy Doughty also won the high jump (6-2).

n West Lowndes competes at 2A, Region 1 meet: At Byhalia, Donald Henley paced the Panthers with a victory in the 110 hurdles (16.07 seconds) on Saturday at Byhalia High School.
Henley also teamed with Brandon Clark, DeAndra Lewis, and Tyquan Lucious to win the 4×100 relay (45.21). He placed fourth in the 100 (11.84).
