The South Lamar High School fast-pitch softball team went 5-2 in the final week of the regular season to prepare for the area tournament.
South Lamar (30-7, 7-1 area) will play Berry at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Parrish.
South Lamar started the week Monday with a 15-1 victory against Lamar County. Kendra Wilson struck out nine and allowed only two hits. Karoline Holsonback and Lauren Crimm each had three hits. Kallie Pollard had a three- run home run and a single for four RBIs. Jessica Wheat also had two singles, and Laken Hancock, Bailie Springfield, and Hannah Cox had hits.
Molly Edwards took the loss. Kristy Whitford had a home run and Kristin White a single for Lamar County.
On Tuesday, South Lamar beat Pickens County 19-5 in five innings. Wilson took the win with six strikeouts, one walk, and five hits. Hancock had three hits and four RBIs. Crimm had a home run, single and three RBIs, while Springfield, Holsonback, Cox, and Pollard each had two hits. Wheat and Blake Hardin each added a single.
On Thursday, South Lamar beat Sulligent 11-1 in six innings and Fayette 3-1.
Against Sulligent, Wilson struck out 12 strikeouts and walked two and allowed only one hit. Crimm had two doubles, Springfield, Cox, and Pollard each had two singles. Hancock, Holsonback, and Katlyn Bryant also had hits.
Montana Hawkins took the loss. She had five strikeouts and walked two. She also had her team’s only hit.
Against Fayette, Wilson pitched a six-hitter and struck out 10 to get the win.
South Lamar scored in the third inning when Hardin reached on a single and advanced on a hit by Hancock and a walk by Springfield. With bases loaded, two scored when Holsonback reached on error. The third run scored on a fielder’s choice by Cox.
At the Hamilton Invitational tournament, South Lamar beat Hamilton 5-0 and lost to Haleyville and Holly Pond.
Wilson took the win against Hamilton. She walked four, struck out four and didn’t allow a hit. Springfield and Bryant each had two hits.
Wilson (12-3) took the loss to Haleyville. She struck out four and allowed two hits and no earned runs. Holsonback and Cox had South Lamar’s only hits.
Cox (7-1) pitched three innings and took the loss against Holly Pond. She struck out four, walked three, and allowed six hits. Bryant had two singles, while Holsonback had a double and Hancock, Cox, and Pollard each had a single.
