MACON — The West Point High School football team did no favors for a struggling Noxubee County offense Friday night.
With Jeffrey Drake, William Ivy, Nick Melton, and Terrence Cherry leading the way, the Green Wave defense dominated for a second-straight week to take a 21-6 victory.
“When you see your classmates smile, you are excited,” Melton said. “When your teachers smile, your principal and your superintendent smile, it means a lot to you. The whole community loves this football team. They are in it with us. It feels great when they enjoy your success.”
West Point (3-1) won its second straight. The Green Wave has allowed one touchdown in the two victories combined. Noxubee County was held to 275 yards.
Noxubee County (2-3) lost its third-straight game for the first time since 2006.
Noxubee County built a 6-0 lead midway through the second quarter when Kymbotric Mason caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Timorrius Conner. On the next play, Dmarrio Edwards hit Drake on a 77-yard touchdown pass to give West Point a 7-6 halftime lead.
Still protecting that 7-6 lead, Tajh Johnson saved the game for West Point with a sack on a fourth down for Noxubee County at the West Point 8-yard line with 3 minutes, 48 seconds left in the third quarter.
West Point expanded the lead on a 2-yard run by Marcus Murphy with 2:03 remaining. That score was set up after Melton recovered a muffed punt by the Tigers.
Chris Calvert closed the scoring with a 20-yard touchdown run in the final minute.
