STARKVILLE — Mississippi State baseball junior Nathaniel Lowe was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Lowe hit .692 (9-for-13) with four RBIs, three runs, two doubles, and a home run in a sweep of Missouri at Dudy Noble Field last weekend. In Thursday’s opener, the Marietta, Georgia, went 5-for-5 with three RBIs and was a triple shy of the cycle.
Lowe is batting .487 (19-for-39) with 15 RBIs in his last 10 games. He is the second Bulldog to earn the honor (Brent Rooker on March 14).
Texas A&M’s Kyle Simonds was named Pitcher of the Week after throwing a no-hitter Saturday in a 3-0 victory against Vanderbilt. The only Commodore batter reached on an error in the second inning. Simonds retired the next 25 for the ninth no-hitter in school history.
Kentucky right-hander Sean Hjelle and LSU’s Brennan Breaux were named co-Freshman of the Week.
n In other baseball news, MSU (33-14-1) stayed steady in five polls and moved up a spot in another.
After sweeping the Tigers, the Bulldogs moved from No. 7 to No. 8 in the Collegiate Baseball poll. MSU remained at No. 3 in the Baseball America, Perfect Game, and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls. It is No. 4 in D1Baseball.com and in the USA Today Coaches polls.
