SKIPPERVILLE, Ala. — One more win.
The Aliceville High School football team will play for a state title after defeating G.W. Long 28-21 Friday night in a semifinals of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 2A playoffs.
Aliceville (13-1) will face Fyffe (15-0) at 3 p.m. Friday at Auburn, Alabama, for the state championship. Aliceville will play in its first state title game since 2000, while Fyffe plays in a third-straight state title game, having won in 2014 and lost in 2015.
Against G.W. Long, Jamar Richardson scored on an 87-yard run with 2 minutes, 56 seconds left in regulation. The Yellow Jackets trailed 21-20 at the time of the score. Deonte Taylor scored on a two-point conversion.
Senior Garrett Sanders ran for 109 first-half yards and two touchdowns for the Rebels. In the second half, Long (12-1) was held to 72 yards and two first downs in its final five series.
Javon Phillips scored on a 21-yard run and Demontez Hinton scored on a 10-yard run as Aliceville battled to a 14-all tie at halftime.
The Yellow Jackets then trailed 21-20 with 5:01 left in the third quarter on a 72-yard run by Hinton.
Aliceville finished with 509 yards. Hinton ran 21 times for 195 yards, while Richardson ran six times for 131 yards. Santiago Taylor was 2 of 8 passing for 70 yards. Richardson had a 38-yard catch, while Nicquavious Craig had a 32-yard catch.
Ky’Andre Lucious led the defense with five tackles. Phillips had a 32-yard interception return.
n Pickens County 23, Addison 6: At Reform, Alabama, the Tornadoes are back in the AHSAA Class 1A state championship game for the first time since winning the 2013 title.
The championship game will match Pickens County (11-3) and Maplesville (13-0) at 3 p.m. Thursday at Auburn, Alabama. The teams met for the 2013 title, with Pickens County winning, 38-13. Pickens County then moved to Class 2A and Maplesville won the 2014 and 2015 Class 1A titles.
Pickens County led 6-0 at halftime. The Tornadoes scored on a 19-yard run by Zach Thomas.
Thomas then connected with Malik Betts on a 44-yard touchdown and Demetrius Windham on a two-point conversion. Thomas was 10 of 20 for 197 yards, ran for 67 yards, and kicked a 22-yard field goal.
Aaron Billups followed with an interception to set up the final Pickens County score. Billups followed up his big defensive play with a 3-yard touchdown run.
