STARKVILLE — Mississippi State freshman defensive back John Michael Hankerson was arrested for the second time in less than a week, a university official confirmed Wednesday.
MSU chief communications officer Sid Salter said Hankerson was arrested for false pretenses Tuesday. Hankerson was arrested last Wednesday for simple assault and trespassing. Salter said the first arrest stemmed from an alleged incident with another student.
Salter said the latest arrest isn’t connected to last week’s arrest.
“When a student is proven to have violated our student code of conduct, he is highly likely to face disciplinary action,” Salter said.
MSU football coach Dan Mullen suspended Hankerson from all team activities after last week’s arrest. He said he was gathering more information about the incident.
Hankerson turned himself in at the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office at 3:57 p.m. Tuesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was released Tuesday on a $500 bond.
Hankerson, a defensive back, hasn’t played this season and is being redshirted. The South Bend, Indiana, native had 27 catches for 527 yards and eight touchdowns and 77 tackles and two interceptions as a senior in 2015 at Washington High School.
