Following a victory against Columbus and a complete game no-hitter against New Albany, Caledonia High School pitcher Logan Suggs has been named The Dispatch’s Prep Player of the Week.
Suggs, a senior leader who committed to play baseball at Hinds Community College in Raymond, had a stellar week in a 3-0 showing that helped Caledonia improve to 19-10 and advance to the second round of the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) playoffs. Caledonia will take on Pontotoc in Game 1 of the best-of-three series Friday.
In the 16-1 against Columbus, Suggs went 1-for-2 with a walk, fielder’s choice, and three runs scored. He also pitched one inning and allowed one hit and an unearned run.
In Game 1 of the first round of the MHSAA playoffs against New Albany, Suggs threw a no-hitter in a 6-0 victory. He walked one and struck out eight in his 79-pitch gem.
Suggs said he has had a good season, but everything seems to be clicking for him in the playoffs. He said it feels good to be successful when his team needs him, but he knows he is going to have to play better to keep it going.
“I was just able to throw all of my pitches for a strike that night,” Suggs said. “My cutter, curveball, and fastball were all working. I was working my changeup when I needed it to, but I just had everything working. I’m just hitting my stride at the plate and on the mound. I have a very settled approach and have everything working. We have everything working.”
In Game 1, Suggs went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. He also reached on an error and stole a base. In Game 2, a 10-0 victory Sunday, he went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. While he excelled at the plate, he threw out a runner out trying to steal second in the top of the first to help keep momentum on Caledonia’s side.
Spencer Unruh, a senior pitcher who threw a complete game in the victory, said he is confident when he is throwing to Suggs. Unruh said Suggs also gives the Confederates confidence when he is performing well at the plate.
“Logan is definitely one of, if not the best players on the team,” Unruh said. “He is a great motivator and great teammate, so he always is really consistent on the field. He is always hitting the ball and making plays behind the plate.”
Suggs is hitting .360 with 22 RBIs, five doubles, one triple, and one home run, a walk-off against Pontotoc. He also has three stolen bases. He is 6-4 with a 2.06 earned run average and one save in 13 appearances. In 51 innings, he has allowed 34 hits and walked 20. He has struck out 70.
Caledonia coach John Wilson knows he doesn’t have Suggs much longer and is trying to make the most of the opportunities he has left with him. Wilson compared Suggs to the Long Beach Dirtbags, a scrappy Division I team that plays tough and does what it has to do to win.
“That’s Logan. That’s the way he is going to be,” Wilson said. “We have a bunch of players like that on our team, and he kind of leads that. He is going to do what it takes to get the job done for us. I’m glad he is on our team, and I hate we are losing him.”
