STARKVILLE — The first offseason in Andy Cannizaro’s tenure as Mississippi State baseball coach has featured two changes to the coaching staff.
The most recent change was in the director of baseball operations position, as Cannizaro has named Trevor Fitts for the role. MSU could announce the move as soon as early this week.
Fitts replaces Lee VanHorn, who is the school’s new assistant athletic director for administration and equipment.
Fitts is a former MSU pitcher, starting the first game of the national championship series in 2013 before graduating after the 2015 season. Fitts came to MSU out of Pelham High School in Alabama — the same high school as current MSU infielder Hunter Stovall — and ended his career with 62 appearances, 22 of them starts.
The other staff change was the hiring of assistant coach Jake Gautreau. Gautreau, a former teammate of Cannizaro’s at Tulane, replaced Will Coggin, another former MSU player. Coggin and Fitts played for Cannizaro’s predecessor, current MSU Director of Athletics John Cohen.
