MILLPORT, Ala. — The Sulligent High School football team closed the regular season on a five-game winning streak Thursday thanks to a 45-21 victory against county rival South Lamar in Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) action.
The AHSAA begins postseason play Friday night. In the opening round of Class 2A, Sulligent will play host to Westbrook Christian, while South Lamar will play host to Decatur Heritage in Class 1A.
For Sulligent (9-1), Jaron Scott was 5-of-8 passing for 99 yards with three touchdowns. Ethan Carter had 22 receiving yards and two touchdowns. C.J. McLemore had a 23-yard touchdown catch.
The Blue Devils built a 30-0 halftime lead behind an 11-yard pass from Scott to Carter, a 1-yard run by Mastin, the McLemore catch, a 6-yard run by Metcalfe, and a 28-yard field goal by Austin Hollis.
In the second half, Scott hit Carter for 13 yards and Mastin had a 31-yard run.
Tyreke Metcalfe led the rushing attack with 18 carries for 228 yards and a touchdown. Marco Mastin added 89 yards on nine rushes with two touchdowns. Metcalfe also had two two-point conversion runs.
Sulligent had 440 yards, including 341 rushing. South Lamar had 307 yards.
For the Blue Devils, Xavier Broyles had an interception and fumble recovery. Hayden Nolen had a fumble recovery. Carter and Morgan Reese forced fumbles.
Sophomore Herachio Washington scored on runs of 6, 68, and 48 yards for South Lamar (7-3).
It was the third-straight county championship for the Sulligent, and the program’s best regular-season record since 2007.
n Gordo 44, Pickens County 12: At Gordo, Alabama, the Greenwave racked up its fourth-straight Pickens County championship with Thursday night’s AHSAA victory.
Both teams won region championships and will play host in the opening round of the playoffs Friday night. Gordo will play host to Providence Christian in Class 3A, while Pickens County will play host to Meek in Class 1A.
Pickens County (8-2) received two passing touchdowns from Aljaron Edwards to Elliott Perry. Those plays covered 72 and 89 yards.
Gordo (9-1) built a 21-12 halftime lead behind two rushing touchdowns from Collin Herring and a score from Essie Davis.
Herring scored on runs of 1 and 7 yards, while Davis scored on runs of 2 and 9 yards. Troy Garner scored on a 9-yard run, while Davis hit Devan Barnett on a 9-yard scoring play.
n Winfield 28, Lamar County 7: At Winfield, Alabama, the Bulldogs enter the postseason on a two-game losing streak.
Lamar County (6-4) scored first on a 7-yard run by Ric Rogers. The teams were tied 7-7 at halftime.
Lamar County will play host to Ider in the AHSAA Class 2A playoffs.
n Hillcrest 34, Aliceville 30: At Aliceville, Alabama, the Yellow Jackets trailed 24-8 at halftime but made things close down the stretch.
For Aliceville (6-4), Zavien Wilkins ran 19 times for 173 yards with a touchdown. Kavon McGraw ran 12 times for 86 yards with three scores. McGraw scored on runs of 15, 19, and 34 yards. Wilkins scored on a 64-yard run. Wilkins ran for two conversions, while McGraw added one.
Aliceville had 269 yards. The Yellow Jackets didn’t complete a pass and were hurt by three turnovers.
Justice Craig led the defense with 10 tackles, while Elijah Plott was in on eight stops.
A 34-yard run by McGraw and conversion by Wilkins brought the Yellow Jackets within 34-30 with two left. Aliceville didn’t get another possession.
Aliceville will play host to Samson in the opening-round of the AHSAA Class 2A playoffs.
