Following its stunning upset of No. 17/13 Auburn Friday, the Mississippi State softball team fell in the series rubber match Sunday afternoon 9-0 in five innings.
The Tigers roughed up Bulldogs freshman starter Grace Fagan for four runs on two hits in the first inning. Fagan was pulled before recording an out.
Next up for MSU is a 5 p.m. Tuesday match at Central Arkansas.
MEN’S TENNIS: The No. 8 Mississippi State men’s tennis team capped off a wildly successful week with a 4-3 win over No. 22 Georgia in Sunday afternoon in Starkville.
Senior Trevor Foshey earned the deciding point against No. 78 freshman Phillip Henning in the No. 5 singles match.
Foshey trailed 5-2, 30-0 in the third set when Henning sustained an ill-fated ankle injury while serving for the match. The St. Cloud, Florida, native then ripped off five straight games to take the frame, 7-5.
The victory marks the fifth in as many contests for the Bulldogs, who now sit at 15-3 on the season.
WOMEN’S TENNIS: For the fourth time in five matches the No. 50-ranked MSU women’s tennis team fell to an SEC foe.
On Sunday, MSU fell 4-0 to SEC-leading No. 2 Georgia in Athens.
It was the first time in four matches the Bulldogs failed to win the doubles point.
MSU will return home for a 3 p.m. contest Friday against Missouri at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre in Starkville.
MEN’S GOLF: The Mississippi State men’s golf team concluded its weekend in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with a 10th-place finish in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate.
Reigning SEC Freshman of the Week Ford Clegg finished tied for 19th, closing out the weekend with an even-par 72.
As a team, MSU totaled its best combined effort of the tournament Sunday with a final round 5-over, 293.
The Bulldogs have next weekend off before heading to the Mason Rudolph Championship April 5 in Franklin, Tennessee.
WOMEN’S GOLF: After two days of competition, the MSU women’s golf team was tied for ninth place in the Evans Derby Experience at the Saugahtachee Country Club in Opelika, Alabama, with a team score of 16-over par.
Junior Ela Grimwood and sophomore Aubrey Jones have led the way for MSU. Grimwood sits tied for eighth overall at even-par, while Jones is tied for 19th at 3-over.
The tournament will conclude with Monday’s final round.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: MSU’s women’s soccer team opened its spring exhibition season with a 1-1 draw at Memphis on Sunday.
After allowing an early penalty kick, rising sophomore Miranda Carrasco netted the equalizer in the 30th minute when her cross found its way past the Memphis goalkeeper into the net.
It was the first goal of Carrasco’s career, though she notched seven assists for the Bulldogs last season.
MSU next heads to Orange Beach, Alabama. for a Saturday meeting with Florida. The match is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 p.m.
