STARKVILLE – Starkville Academy couldn’t keep up with Lamar in its home opener Friday, falling 33-13.
Matt Miller and Dylan Starke had the lone touchdowns for Starkville Academy on the evening.
“Our guys played really hard,” Starkville Academy coach Chase Nicholson said. “We made too many mistakes. And Lamar made a lot of big plays.
The Volunteers (0-1) are back in action Friday in a road matchup with French Camp Academy.
West Point 34, Horn Lake 6
HORN LAKE – The West Point football team started its state title defense with a 34-6 dismantling of Horn Lake Friday on the road.
“We’re proud of our guys staying focused going on a long road trip,” West Point coach Chris Chambless said. “We have a lot of new faces and our seniors did a great job of leading us and getting us focused. They were positive through some tough times and we’re proud of them.”
Running back Brandon Harris led the way offensively with 162 yards rushing, while Dantariyus Cannon added 102 rushing yards.
Gray Berry was 1 for 5 passing with a 55-yard touchdown to TJ Anderson, while Harris completed 1 of 4 passes for 35 yards.
“We had a great effort and played with great energy and tempo,” Chambless said. “Everything we preach about, we did that. We overcame some difficult situations in the game with different turnovers.”
West Point (1-0) is back in action Friday in a road contest against Louisville.
West Lowndes 34, Ethel 6
ETHEL – Running back Marquez Holiday led West Lowndes to a dominating 34-6 victory over Ethel Friday with a 14 carry, three-touchdown, 167-yard performance. Meanwhile, Kelvin Wilburn had five carries for 45 yards and two touchdowns and Quay Sanders racked up 67 rushing yards and a two-point conversion on five touches.
West Lowndes (1-0) is back in action on the road against McAdams Friday.
Victory Christian Academy 26, Unity Christian 18
LELAND – Victory Christian football held off Unity Christian for a season-opening 26-18 victory Friday in Leland.
Dallas Colom was an offensive workhorse for Victory Christian, rushing for 145 yards and two touchdowns while adding 21 receiving yards. Camron Henley added 20 yards on the ground.
Houston Ballard and Nadarion Higgins scored the other touchdowns of the night for Victory Christian.
Defensively, Lahndon Townley recorded 11 tackles and one sack, while Drake Clements had five tackles and a sack. As a team, Victory Christian recovered three fumbles.
Victory Christian (1-0) is back in action on the road against North River Friday.
Humphreys Academy 32, Columbus Christian Academy 8
BELZONI – The Columbus Christian Academy football team dropped its contest with Humphreys Academy 32-8 Friday night in Belzoni.
