STARKVILLE ó The people who work behind the scenes in the Mississippi State athletic department are very important to athletic director Greg Byrne. To recognize those individuals, Byrne has instituted the Department Employees Service Awards.
STARKVILLE ó Dawn Staley is accustomed to excellence. As a player at the University of Virginia, Staley was a three-time Kodak All-American (1990-92), a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year (1991-92), the NCAA tournamentís Most Outstanding Player (1991), and the Sports Illustrated Player of the Year (í91). Oh, she also won three gold medals as a member of the United Statesí Olympic womenís basketball team and was a member of the Womenís National Basketball Association All-Decade Team.
STARKVILLE ó The opportunity to get a big hit or to make a key pitch can be the difference when a baseball game is on the line. Junior pitcher Justin Bussey and redshirt freshman Brent Brownlee took advantage of their situations in the eighth inning Wednesday to help the Mississippi State baseball team.
There is a competitive race at the top of the Southeastern Conferenceís Eastern Division. At 7-3, Kentucky and Tennessee were expected to compete for an Eastern Division title. But first-year coach Darrin Horn has helped South Carolina (7-3) become the surprise of the league.
The Mississippi State menís basketball team hasnít had the kind of start to the second half of the Southeastern Conference season it wanted. MSU opened SEC play with victories against Arkansas, Alabama, and Vanderbilt and finished the first half of the league slate 6-2. The second eight hasnít started so great for the Bulldogs.
A minor issue that kept Mississippi State signee Chad Bumphis from being eligible for nearly two months has been resolved. MSU asked the NCAA to reinstate Bumphis, a four-star wide receiver from Tupelo, after he was involved in a secondary rules violation with former football coach Sylvester Croom.
