Against Sunday alcohol sales

It is very appropriate that the State of Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol has a great push on during the Aug. 15 to Sept. 15 period to help stop drinking and driving. This is the beginning of a new school year and our children and grandchildren are back on the road to their schools each day.It has always been amazing to me that there are laws against drinking and driving yet people can purchase alcohol at most any store, bar or restaurant and get in their car and drive. It is hypocritical to think people who drive to these establishments will not go out and get in their automobiles and drive under the influence. If you are charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, this is a more serious charge than a charge of just having a particular drug in your blood. How serious a problem is driving under the influence (DUI)? Extremely serious: 30% of Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash during their lives. Driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) is probably one of the most commonly committed crimes. State laws specify the levels of blood alcohol content (0.08 in MS) at which a person is presumed to be under the influence.

Now the City of Columbus ("City Sets Hearing On Sunday Alcohol" front page headlines in the Commercial Dispatch Tuesday Aug. 25th) is considering making it legal to sell alcohol in establishments on Sunday. The Council has already given these establishments the right to sell alcohol six days a week from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m. The guise for the Sunday sales is to generate tax revenue. Why not just cut back on services until the economy turns back. Do our elected officials ever think of cutting costs instead of trying to raise taxes? Our Federal government is a perfect example of not doing so and it is going to cost us dearly. Look at the debt that we are piling on our children and grandchildren. One day and it looks soon we want be worried about all the give away programs because this great country will be bankrupt, then we will be looking at the dead golden goose. Then where will all the recipients of the give away programs be? We all will be the losers and back to earning our living by the sweat of our brow.

But back to the point of alcohol sales on Sunday. Is not six days a week enough City Council? Do we not have any respect for the Lord''s day anymore? It doesn''t matter what I say or what you say, but we better understand that it does matter what the Lord says "Remember the Sabbath Day (Sunday for Christians) and keep it holy." I want to thank Charlie Box for his stance against Sunday sales of alcohol. I just want to ask the other Council members to think long and hard about this matter and the fact you might lose one of your parents, children or grandchildren to a socially acceptable drinker after allowing another day of drinking and driving to be added to the week. Just let the statistics and the Lord guide you is my prayer.

So if alcohol is sold on Sunday, then Christians will be forced to defile the Sabbath?

This may shock and amaze you, Ray, but not everyone is a Christian. Christianity should not be imposed on the public by law. Whole point of the First Amendment.

I agree with Ray, the city should look at cutting back. I mean is one more day of alchol sales gonna do that much? doubtful!! Its only one day so why press the issue(unless it the city leaders who wish to buy liquor and currently cant). Why does columbus follow suite on meaningless 1 day things? The Mayor said not too long ago that when a surronding city passes a law, Columbus will likely follow. Well what about the Smoking Ban Mr. Major!! But again back to the story, for you JC, while not everyone is christian, everyone on the sabbath day who buys liquor and talks down about christians will still be spending money that says "In God We Trust"! As you can see our nation was founded on christianity and the 1st admendment allows us freedom of religon and speech. If you cant handle that then maybe you should go else where.

So, A., you read the First Amendment as allowing the government to legislate based on nothing more than sectarian religious principles? I have to say, that's a novel reading.

why is it so bad to have a drink on sunday? i understand the religeous outlook on the issue but jesus and his followers drank wine, they turned perfectly good water into wine! I also understand their are certain people who over do the liqour wine or beer but that is human nature let god and the law do their job, don't judge!

Let's get rid of "in god we trust," too. This nation was not founded on christianity. We have a secular government in part to protect christians and believers of other faiths from each other. Your freedom of religion is undermined when you impose its strictures on those of us who don't share your beliefs.

HJ, I think you're in the wrong thread. Although I must say you have one-note conservatism down pat. Hey, maybe you aren't in the wrong thread...

A, if you can't handle the fact that this country was founded on freedom of religion, than maybe YOU should go elsewhere. If you want laws to dictate what people can or can't do one day a week based on Christianity, then shut your pie hole when someone from another religion wants to prevent you from doing something you enjoy on THEIR holy day. Now do you understand why we have this thing called freedom of religion? If you want to live in a country that dictates your religion, go move somewhere that you're forced by law to follow some other religion and see how much you like it then.

Note to HJ: You should be ashamed of yourself. People like you are the reason why so many people have such a negative opinion of southerners. I'm sick of whiny backwoods hicks like you with your "liberals are evil" attitudes. If it wasn't for those "evil liberals," women wouldn't have the right to vote, and we'd still have different water fountains and building entrances based on race. Stop being so ignorant and closed-minded and learn to be more respectful of people with different views than yours. As for your big government comments, you might want to remember that big government isn't just some "evil liberal" thing. Republican politicians have been equally guilty of pushing bigger government in recent years. You should stop letting tabloid trash like Fox News dictate how you think and act.

hahahahaha all you people crack me up! One person says something about religion and you all loose sight on the issue at hand. You all are rediculous and this is why our nation is headed the way it is! The truth of the matter is yes we do have freedom of religon and speech so we can bash each other all day about this but the issue here is revenue and what is best for the city.I really dont care one ioda if they allow liquor sales on Sunday, but I dont beleive for one minute that it will help the city. Oh wait yeah it might because of the increased DUI cases we will have.

SB, I can handle the fact that this country was founded on freedom of religion, Im not the one throwing off on it all you all are! And by sugessting removing in god we trust from money is idiotic, I have a better idea since you have a problem with that, how about you just give your money up! I mean if it bothers you that much than why carry it around? And I'm sorry but history dont lie, this nation was founded on christian beleifs and that is just the way it is..sorry to tell you. Oh and it dont look to promising anyway because Starkville was denied the right to sell on Sunday!

Article Comment HJ commented at 9/4/2009 5:20:00 PM:

hello SB... First of all my comment was stated on complete truth. The US was built framed by white christian men. Was i wrong or are your liberal buddies telling you that the history books lied it was started by a middleastern man, a jew, and hilary clinton. I understand the fact of Religeous Freedom but i really think our fore fathers meant freedom to choose what christian denomination you feel comfortable worshiping.i don't think they accepted any other then. And most christian religeons accept drinking and muslim religeous beliefs outlaw it totally.

The democratic party is going to destroy this country. the liberals cannot stand to be stood up against because all the facts every republican toss on to you rediculous liberal view are destoyed and you cannot stand it! the liberals did it to bush so why can't we do it now. liberals sound like they work for the kremlin! from healthcare to global warming all these ideas are ludacris! lets take hardworking men and womens tax dollars and blow them on stupid theories and ideology! Big government, explain to me republican big government SB?

Article Comment HJ commented at 9/4/2009 5:22:00 PM:

oh SB... closed minded? I think i have a handle on my beliefs, open minded is just another way of defining ignorance! Hippie...
