It actually felt chilly Monday morning.
Fall is here, and we couldn''t be more ready. Some prefer the summer and the heat -- not us. We like our days cut with cool breezes.
More reasons to say good riddance to last summer: It was hotter and drier than normal. According to the national Weather Service, temperatures average 2-4 degrees higher than normal over the summer. And, 42 percent of the state is under "abnormally dry" conditions, compared to 31 percent of the state three months ago, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Nearly 19 percent of the state, mostly portions of the Delta, is currently under moderate, severe or extreme drought conditions, according to the monitor.
It makes us sweat a little thinking about it. Maybe the fall will bring some rain along with it.
We''re looking forward to all the rest that fall brings -- football Saturdays; trick-or-treaters; stuffed turkeys and cranberry sauce; the turning of the leaves; the smell of smoke wafting from our chimneys.
We''re ready for the sweaters to come down from the top of the closet. But this is Mississippi, and we know that shorts and flip-flops will be part of our wardrobe for weeks to come.
In the meantime, keep the cool breezes coming.
