OXFORD — The University of Mississippi football team welcomed the cloud cover over the practice fields Thursday in its second practice in full pads.
“We got some work done today,” Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said. “This cloud cover was phenomenal. They loved it. We competed really hard today. We got in some tight red zone and guys really rolled off the ball.”
Members of the state”s top recruiting class continue to impress Nutt on both sides of the ball.
“Two that caught my eye today were Uriah Grant on defense and Aaron Morris on offense, Nutt said. “Aaron doesn”t know everything, but he was really physical today.”
When asked if Morris could get in the lineup Nutt said, “It could happen at guard or tackle. He”s a talented, talented guy. He just has a long way to go mentally, but he”s getting there. As far as feet wise and physical stature, he has it. He”s going to be really good. We knew he was good, but the speed of the game and on the fourth day you don”t expect this. He just keeps turning your head in one-on-one and middle drills. Where a lot of freshmen fold back at the end when it”s hot and they”re tired, he just keeps pushing to the top. He”s a special guy.”
Nutt also praised other members of the offensive side of the ball.
“The first group offensive line was good most of the time,” Nutt said. “Jamal Mosley and Ferbia Allen were very good with blocking and catching, running routes. Enrique Davis got a lot of work today and worked hard.
“Donte Moncrief had an outstanding day. Philander Moore competed hard. He made several good catches and took a sweep for about 15 yards, which was really good. Barry (Brunetti) and Randall Mackey threw the ball extremely well. We”re excited about it. We”re not there yet by any means, but we”re working on it.”
Ole Miss will return to the field at 4:30 p.m. today at 4:30 p.m. Practice will remain open to the public through Saturday. The Rebels will scrimmage at 6 p.m. Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
