Cassidy Simmons, Distinguished Young Woman of Lowndes County, will be one of 33 Mississippi high school seniors competing for more than $44,500 in college scholarships when the DYW Program of 2014 begins July 18 in Meridian.
During the week-long program in Meridian, participants are evaluated on scholastic achievement, fitness, self-expression, talent and interview. Simmons has chosen a ballet variation of "La Esmeralda" for her talent.
Cassidy, the daughter of Melissa and Chuck Strickland and Lane Simmons of Columbus, attends the Mississippi School of the Arts. Her accomplishments include Special Judge's Award: Outstanding Dancer, Algebra II Award, Highest Average and English I Highest Average. She's had 14 years of dance training, is involved with BaseCamp missions in Pinebelt and Special Session 2 at Camp Bratton Green.
Her community service activities include BaseCamp and Ole Brook Fest as a performer. Her interests include anything involving being on stage and reaching out to others and her community. She plans to attend Texas Women's University to double major in dance and psychology.
