Dolly Parton said it best: “It’s hard being a diamond in a rhinestone world.” I can’t help feeling that way about so many new hair care products promising the sun, moon and stars. Heck, what’s a Southern belle to do with such great expectations from a pretty bottle of pricey lather — just rinse and repeat, hoping for a miracle?
Way back in beauty school even I fell hook, line and sinker for the genie in a bottle whether it was shampoo, conditioner or mousse. Oh, yes, I remember all the commercials, too. Vidal’s “If you don’t look good, we don’t look good” and L`Oreal’s “because you’re worth it” declarations gave us hope, made by larger-than-life Vidal Sassoon and from the lips of famous and beloved women.
Nowadays, I tell guests in our salon all about new potions, elixirs and concoctions that I love while cautiously advising them that trial and error is the best approach when trying new things. Well, we try to avoid any serious errors, but what I mean is everyone does not always end up liking the same things. You have to try them to find out if they’re right for you.
The most popular question harkens us right back to Dolly and remains mostly unanswerable: “How do I separate the diamonds from the rhinestones?” Well, my dear, it’s back to trial and error with a few guidelines. As a general rule, naturally curly hair needs moisture, fine hair craves volume, and all hair needs to shine. As Rhianna sings, “Shine bright like a diamond.”
One of my favorite obsessions of the moment is Redken’s brand new Diamond Oil hair care line devoted to all those who long for shiny tresses to make their friends pea green with envy. It won’t make the tresses green, just the friends, and only metaphorically, I promise. Or here’s a thought: Get them their own bottle.
Toss all those “shine sprays” away, and open up a sparkling new innovation. Traditional shine sprays sometimes stay on top of the hair, not absorbing well and leaving the hair feeling oily. Diamond Oil’s exclusive formula of silicone-free oils includes camelina, coriander, apricot, olive, jojoba and coconut oils that deliver unprecedented strength and shine to all layers of the hair.
In this case, it was Marilyn Monroe and not Dolly who said it best: “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” I’m head-over-heels listening to the rave reviews from women who are leaving the salon delighted with both the lightness and the shine of Diamond Oil. Why not try it or one of the many other new hair care products available this summer?
